The text has a subtitle which reads: " (otherwise known as The Battle Hymn of the Republic (Brought Down to Date), 1900." “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” which Northern soldiers sang through the bloodiest days of the Civil War. McWhirter says it is “no accident” that such a defiantly anti-slavery song The Story Behind Battle Hymn of the Republic Julia Ward Howe and her husband Samuel pitched in to help the Sanitary Commission at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. As a result of their volunteer work, President Lincoln invited them with some others to Washington. A lyrical poet and prolific author in her own right, Howe is best remembered for her new words to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” She was active in prison reform, the fight to end slavery, and the fight to win equal rights for women. Julia Ward Howe’s efforts for social justice continued after the war.

Its tune and its early lyrics were written by William Steffe about 1856. Its first verse and refrain were: Say brothers, will you meet us?
